More in this Section...

We are taking steps toward becoming an Age-Friendly Community. This type of community allows people of all ages to participate in activities that keep everyone healthy and included in community life.

In October 2023, Richmond Hill Council approved the Age-Friendly Community Strategy to help create an environment for all ages to thrive.

As the senior population continues to grow, it is more important than ever to support the health and wellbeing of older Canadians. In Canada, older adults represent the country's fastest growing age group – a trend that is expected to continue for many years to come across our nation and here at home in Richmond Hill.

We worked with the Richmond Hill community to identify the needs of older adults and seniors across the City to develop our Age-Friendly Community strategy.

World Health Organization Age-Friendly Cities Information

Age-friendly communities support aging with dignity, respect and independence, and promote the inclusion of older adults in all areas of community life. The World Health Organization's (WHO's) Age-friendly Cities Framework developed in the Global Age-Friendly Cities Guide proposes eight interconnected domains to help identify and address barriers to the well-being and participation of older people:

  1. Outdoor spaces and buildings
  2. Transportation
  3. Housing
  4. Respect and social inclusion
  5. Civic participation and employment
  6. Communication and information
  7. Community support and health services
  8. Social participation

View our Richmond Hill Age-Friendly Community Handout that describes the information mentioned above.

Project Purpose

The purpose of this project is to complete a Five-Year Age-Friendly Community Strategy that will provide prioritized goals and actions to guide the City’s future decisions on older adult policies, practices, services, programs and amenities. The strategy will bring together the best ideas to support older adults as they age, including coordinating services from relevant service providers and streamlining information.

The Age-Friendly Community Strategy is being developed in consultation with the Age-Friendly Community Council.

Age-Friendly Community Council

The Age-Friendly Community Council (AFCC) connects the community, businesses and Richmond Hill to achieve the goals and recommendations of Richmond Hill’s Age-Friendly Community Strategy.

The AFCC is composed of community members from various sectors including:

  • Citizen members
  • Local Businesses
  • Local Community Groups

Call for Applications for the 2023-24 term is now closed. The next call for applications will be in Fall 2024 for the 2024-25 term.

Committee Information

The purpose of the AFCC is to build a collaborative working relationship between the community, local businesses and the City, to provide input and direction into the Richmond Hill Age-Friendly Community Strategy. The AFCC is an advisory body to Council and various division staff of the City of Richmond Hill.

The Age Friendly Community Council consists of members from Richmond Hill’s older adult residents, local businesses that serve the older adult population, and representatives from community organizations that serve older adults in Richmond Hill. Members are experienced in issues facing older adults and will be drawn from a broad range of community sectors.

All members hold office for a two-year term and meetings are held three times a year. The schedule is set with input from the AFCC members and meetings are held during the business day.

Members are responsible for:

  • Attending all regularly scheduled meetings and actively participate
  • Providing opinion, insight and advice on the effective implementation of the Richmond Hill Age-Friendly Community Strategy
  • Attending community engagement events where appropriate, to support and advocate for the recommendations of the Age-Friendly Community Strategy
  • Taking information on the Age-Friendly Community Strategy initiatives to the community and bringing community responses and issues forward to the AFCC
